#1 Bad Habits That Can Damage Your Hair: Washing Your Hair Everyday

The first and most popular bad habit that can damage your hair badly is overwashing your hair. Many people wash their hair every day, especially people with oily hair problems or swimmers. If your hair can get greasy very quickly and look oily the next morning you wake up, it’s perfectly understandable that you might want to wash it to get rid of the oil. But washing your hair every day isn’t going to solve this problem, if not only making it worse.

Chemicals in shampoo can strip your hair off of its natural oil. This can cause dry hair, which in turn will make your scalp react to that by producing more oil and making your hair even greasier. If you have dry hair already then this is even worse, as by washing your hair every day, you’re stripping off all the moisture that your hair needs to grow stronger. If you have this nasty habit, then you should quit now.

Try using dry shampoo when it gets too much to handle or powder your hair to get rid of the oily look. If you don’t like those solutions, then a quick rinse under cold water is fine. It might not feel like when you wash your hair with shampoo, but it helps to get rid of the excess oil and won’t damage your hair as long as you keep the water cold.

Speaking of washing your hair, another bad habit that many girls have is to brush their hair right after they take their shower. No matter how wide a tooth your comb can be, it won’t help you from saving your hair strands from falling off. Hair is the most vulnerable when it’s wet, as the cuticles are all open and the hair shafts are softened, if you brush your hair when it’s wet then you’ll guarantee to lose some strands or your hair will be end-splitted.

Wait until your hair is damp if not fully dry to brush your hair out. You can gently take a soft towel and blot your hair to make it dry faster while using your finger to slowly work through all the tangles that you might have. Using a soft fiber brush like boar bristle also helps if your hair is easily damaged.

Styling your hair is a part of everybody’s daily hair routine, but if you wear the same hairstyle all the time, then you might want to stop. For instance, if you always tie your hair into a high ponytail, you’re pulling your hair back tightly all the time. This puts too much tension on the scalp and ultimately causes a condition called traction alopecia. Especially common around the hairline and temples, it can lead to permanent hair loss.

Change up your hairstyle once in a while. If you’re wearing a high ponytail, then switch to a low ponytail for two to three days then come back. If you’re braiding your hair, then try some messy buns instead. Another tip is to try to use a softer and more flexible hair tie as they won’t pull at your hair much. Hair elastics that have no give in them can create tiny fractures in the hair shaft which can weaken it and lead to breakage.

One of the worst and quickest ways to damage your hair is overusing heat tools to style your hair. The high temperature will make your hair dry out and your color fade quicker. Without the proper protection and treatments afterward, your hair will quickly become a straw-like mess that is extremely damaged and has a ton of split ends.

To avoid that, try to limit the amount of time you have to style your hair with your hair straightener or curling iron to no more than twice per week. Using proper heat protectant before you style your hair using heat, and remember to give your hair enough hydration. You can also try to style your hair heatless. The overnight scarf curls are an amazing example of these heatless methods that you should definitely try out.
